Climate Strategy & Zero-carbon Philosophy
Xiaomi's mission is to improve lives worldwide with innovative technology while helping combat climate change through eco-friendly practices. Their Zero-carbon Philosophy aims to reduce the carbon footprint of their products and services, and promote greener lifestyles and a low-carbon society.

GHG Emission Reduction Targets
Xiaomi has a phased approach to reduce GHG emissions, with a target to reduce per capita emissions by 4.5% by 2026. As of Dec 2022, they achieved a 21.12% reduction. They're committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions to support the global net-zero goal by 2050.

Reducing Environmental Footprint Through R&D and Circular Economy
Xiaomi reduced environmental footprints through R&D of clean tech, product upgrades, circular economy, and e-waste management. They invested over 50% of R&D expenses in clean tech and generated 59.7% of revenue from clean tech products. Examples of their progress include:

5G & Energy-saving Signal Transmission Technology
Xiaomi improved smartphone power-saving efficiency by 5G energy-saving tech such as self-adaptive broadband and energy optimization. WLAN chips and dynamic transmission reduced power consumption by 30% compared to previous models.

Energy-efficient Display Technology
By switching to Dark Mode, which turns the smartphones' background into black, the energy consumption of the display can be reduced by as much as 70% when using specific applications.

Charging Technology
In 2022, more than 100 million smart devices and terminals used Xiaomi’s fast-charging technologies, which saved nearly 57 million kWh of energy consumption and 24,852 tons of CO2e emissions compared to conventional fast-charging technology.

Eco-friendly Packaging
Xiaomi changed its packaging for its ecosystem products from buckling boxes to flattened carton boxes and removed plastic handles. Through this upgrade, the company reduced the use of paper packaging by an average of 0.3m² and removed about 80g of plastic per product.

Recycling and Disposal
Xiaomi recycled 4,500 tons of e-waste in 2022 and plans to recycle 38,000 tons and use 5,000 tons of recycled material from 2022 to 2026. They expand their Trade-In program and collect recyclable items in-store, by mail, and at the consumer’s door. Xiaomi also collaborates with third parties to dispose of waste from the repair process of electronic products and components.

Refurbishment and Reuse
The company is committed to promoting the development of a circular economy by refurbishing used products. In 2022, its renovation factory refurbished approximately 94,000 smartphones, 5,600 electric scooters, and 6,200 smart televisions, all of which were sold as certified refurbished products.

Enhancing Durability

Xiaomi selects durable materials for its products, such as wear-resistant ceramic and synthetic silicone leather, and sets high testing standards for dustproofing, waterproofing, and drop resistance. They also released a long-lasting battery with 25% longer lifespan and full charging and discharging capabilities in 2022.
